The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM)

Directed By: Akshitha Pinnamaraju

About:

The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) serves as one of the United Nations’ primary forums for addressing issues involving human rights, cultural preservation, and the social impact of globalization. Culture has long served as a reflection of history, identity, and tradition, but in the modern international landscape, it has also become deeply connected to politics, economics, and global influence. As globalization expands cultural exchange, it has also raised concerns surrounding exploitation, ownership, representation, and ethical responsibility. Through this committee, we will be exploring the ways in which culture can be both preserved and manipulated within the international community.

The first topic will examine the politicization and commercialization of cultural and historical artifacts and heritage. Delegates will debate the growing black market trade of antiquities, disputes surrounding repatriation, and the role of museums, private collectors, and governments in controlling cultural property. While addressing these issues, delegates will address the use of historical heritage as a political tool through nationalism, territorial claims, and historical revisionism, as well as the ethical implications of profiting from cultural significance.

The second topic will focus on the politicization of international sports and athletic culture. While sports are often viewed as a symbol of unity and diplomacy, they have increasingly become tied to propaganda, nationalism, and international image-building. Delegates will explore issues such as sports washing, international boycotts, athlete political activism, and disputes surrounding national representation in global competitions. Delegates will focus the debate on the extent to which sports can remain politically neutral and the responsibilities of international sporting organizations in responding to political and humanitarian concerns.

Throughout the committee, delegates will be encouraged to consider the intersection of cultural power and globalization while developing solutions that promote cultural integrity, ethical international cooperation, and respect for human rights.
