Press Corps: Into the Newsroom

BREAKING NEWS—In this edition of press corps, delegates will take on the role of an international news agency, and will be tasked to cover the most pressing issues of Gatormun XXIV. They will interview delegates and roam through diverse agencies, historical periods, and even fantasy worlds to write the best news articles that will expose information, decisions and inconsistencies in each committee. These brave journalists will experience first-hand what it is like to be part of the news room: collaboration, integrity, and proper journalistic etiquette will be of utmost importance to bring these stories to light. In this fast-paced environment, reporters will learn that words have power, and that the narrative they choose to follow comes with great responsibility. Will you stick with an objective and impartial view— or will you favor those in power?

This committee will require a position paper to help you fully prepare to represent your news agency in the most accurate way.

Committee Description:

Melany Varela (They/She) is a International Relations & Digital Journalism major at Florida International University, who is also pursuing a certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and in Women and Gender Studies. She was born in Florida, but was raised in Cali, Colombia. They started their MUN experience as a delegate in 6th grade, until becoming the Secretary General for their high school's conference. Recently, she has helped staff CIMUN, FIMUN and GATORMUN.

Outside of MUN, she works at FIU’s Pride Student Union in the role of Communications Director, where they manage social media, create marketing for events, and do advocacy efforts for the queer community. In their free time, she enjoys watching movies, delving into any artsy activity, and going out on adventures with her friends: doing photography in the Everglades, going paddleboarding on the beach, or even just a nice stroll around campus. They are very excited to be able to bring back their vision of Press Corps to GATORMUN XXIV, and wishes for all delegates to bring all their journalistic passion and knowledge into this committee!
